Review on Suncoat nail polish

We know that Suncoat water-based nail polish is more natural, healthier and safer alternative than regular nail polishes which we are so used to. But using this nail polish initially required a bit of getting used to. It's like the first time when you switch your regular diet to a new, healthier one. However after a while, you'll get the feel of how it works and has better control of its application.

Before doing your manicure with Suncoat nail polish, pick a time when you are more relaxed and have some time for yourself. I like doing my nails before bedtime because I won't use my hands as much as during the day. And by the time I wake up, the polish is all set and strong. Below are the steps how I did my manicure with Suncoat nail polish.

Preparing the nails

  • I massaged my nails with cuticle oil, and filed them.
  • Then I applied cuticle remover around the nails, put on some moisturizer, wrapped hands in plastic bags and waited about 10-15 minutes.
  • After cleaning the cuticles, I washed my nails in warm soapy water, to get rid of any oil so the polish will last longer. Some people use the acetate/non-acetone polish remover to wipe off the oil from the nails. But I avoid using it as it's known to dry up the nails.

Applying the Suncoat nail polish #25 Desert Sunset

  • I applied it just like other regular nail polish. I found out that it was very important to apply a ‘THIN coat’. Applying a thick single layer would seem to take forever to dry (I learned it from my first time experience). By the time I was done with the last nail on one hand, the polish on the first nail was dry and ready for the next layer. It took me about 3 minutes for each layer to dry, only slightly longer than the regular polish.
  • The polish looked streaky at first. To fix this, I applied 3 to 4 layers to achieve the more solid and professional look. More layers also would help the polish lasts longer.
  • When the Suncoat nail polish looks too thick or streaky (due to the lost of moisture over time), just add water A DROP at a time and shake well before using it until it achieves a smoother application. No need for a nail polish thinner.

applying the Clear Top Coat #23

  • Just like applying other regular top coat. Top coat will give the glossy and fine look for the nails, and make the polish last longer.
  • A great tip I found useful is to apply cuticle oil over the dry, final polish, so that it would not stick on anything in contact.

My thoughts

I was really amazed that I didn’t smell the chemical fumes and unpleasant odor that usually came with the traditional nail polish. I highly recommend this polish for people who have problem with the sickening smell of conventional nail polish.

First time I tried, it felt a bit strange. But after some time, I got the feel of how it worked. It was actually quite easy to apply. Just make sure to give yourself extra time for the extra layers.

I heard one user commenting that she didn't like the suncoat nail polish because it is slow to dry and streaky when applied by her nail technician. In my opinion, many nail technicians are so used to with the regular, quick-dry solvent nail polish that they lack the patience. They also don't have yet the experience using this new water-based nail polish. In my experience, when you apply the Suncoat thinly, it doesn't take more time to dry than the regular polish.

Suncoat water-based polish is formulated for quick drying and long lasting, while putting consumer’s health at forefront (read 'Why is water-based nail polish so much better?'). If you are health conscious and have your nails done by professionals, I suggest visiting the nail salon during off-peak hour, or perhaps look for technicians who are willing to explore new products. After all, your safety and health are worth far more than the little extra time.
